Infection Control
Infections are caused by microorganisms, which are too small to be seen by the naked eye but can cause serious illness to a fragile immune system. Microorganisms can be carried from one person to another through contact. As a caregiver, be especially carefully to follow these steps to prevent infection.
Wash your hands often
- Before eating or handling food
- After using the toilet, touching your pets or handling money
- After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
- Before and after touching your eyes, nose or mouth
Cleaning body fluid or blood spills
- Use rubber gloves and paper towels to wipe up body fluids. Dispose of gloves and paper towels in a double plastic bag before putting in the trash.
- Clean spill area with a disinfectant (one part bleach to 10 parts water).
Properly dispose of contaminated supplies
- Place contaminated dressings, gloves, suction catheters and diapers in a double plastic bag and tie before putting in the trash.
Disposal of sharps
- Place contaminated razors, needles, broken glass, IV catheters, etc. in a puncture-resistant container and secure the lid with tape.
- Never attempt to re-cap needles.
Care of soiled linen
- Soiled linen should be handled quickly but as little as possible.
- Wash soiled linen in hot, soapy water separate from other linen.
Wound care
- Always wash hands before changing a loved one’s bandage or dressing.
- Place soiled dressings in a double plastic bag and tie before putting in the trash.
- Wash your hands a second time.
