Coping with Change
Emotional essentials for the caregiver
- Remember to take care of yourself. When you're healthy, it is easier to provide good care.
- Take the time to talk with family members and friends about your situation. Help them understand the support you may need.
- Stay positive. Your attitude and emotions can set the tone for the person in your care.
- Acknowledge your own feelings. Accept and share them honestly with the people you trust.
- Seek professional advice to discuss any anxieties and identify ways to help you relax.
Day-to-day assistance
- Reach out to family members, friends and local community groups that can help you take a break from your caregiving responsibilities.
- Seek opportunities to talk about daily care issues with your loved one, other family members and friends. Frequent communication will help all involved understand their roles during a transition.
- Support your loved one's need for independence. By trying to take charge of another's life, you may inadvertently cause them to lose self-confidence in performing daily tasks.
